ERIK BRAUNN, GUITARIST FOR IRON BUTTERFLY, DEAD AT 52
Iron Butterfly guitarist Erik Braunn, famous for playing the 17-minute anthem, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," died last Friday of cardiac arrest. He was 52. Braunn was a violin prodigy who started playing at the age of four. He joined Iron Butterfly when he was 16 and toured with them from 1967-1969. The band, comprised of Braunn, Doug Ingle, Ron Bushy and Lee Dorman, released their psychedelic tune "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" in 1968 and it went platinum. A three-minute version became a Top 40 radio hit. He reunited once in a while with the band for performances and also worked as a songwriter, musician and producer until his death. Dorman, the bassist for the band, said that he and Braun were tour roommates be- fore Iron Butterfly became stars. "I remember him growing up with the band," he said on Monday. "It was a pretty tight-knit group...when he left everyone just sort of drifted."
