my friend & fellow female industrial noisemusik aficionado chroma_if and i were talking about music software last night. i am just starting to get back into doing music again, now that i've gotten a multi-gig HD and extra RAM attached to this here box.
anyway, she says the best sound editor is cool edit. i prefer soundforge - i like the way you can make your preview of an effect be just a second or two long even if you're applying the effect to a 7 minute sound file. you can see this saves LOTS OF TIME and computer resources as well, and as far as i can tell, cool edit won't do that.
she's teaching me how to make simple compositions on fruityloops. she has the same taste in noise as i do: one chord songs, low tones, sinister vibrations. as well as other things which i shan't mention here.
i want suggestions from the masters here, who know more about this shit than either of us. what are your favourite editors and composition software? there's a lot of them out there - pick one for each category. iin other words: if you had to just use one editor and one composition program, which ones would they be?
