Actually one of my ancestors (Nathaniel Gann) helped escaped slaves before the civil war near the Houston Area. He used to feed them and let them hide in his barns overnight. One night a large number of men with hoods over their heads riding on horses surrounded his house and told him they wouldn't hurt his wife and young daughters if he'd go with them. The next morning he was found dead hanging from a tree. The State of Texas has put a small (roadside type) monument next to the cabin he lived in honoring him. Didn't do him much good though. -Stash
