And the story....

In a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, a local man became trapped up to his waist in a rain-saturated sandpit southwest of La Vernia near F.M. 775.

The man reportedly had been hunting frogs, and got stuck around 9 p.m. Sunday. Volunteer firemen hoisted him out unharmed at about 6 a.m. Monday, according to reports.

Passersby had heard the man yelling at about 2:30 a.m. Monday. They contacted the sheriff’s department, which brought deputies and La Vernia volunteer EMTs.

Standing on ladders and plywood, firemen then tried unsuccessfully to pull the large man out by hand after building a small cofferdam around him and shoveling away sand and bailing water, La Vernia fire Chief Kip Workman said.

A Stockdale volunteer fireman later brought mountaineering rope and hardware, which were hooked to the boom of the La Vernia department’s wrecker truck.

The man was bundled in harnesses, the line was attached, and firemen lifted him out.

“He was tired but he was all right. He walked out of there on his own,” Workman said.
