Oh baby, give me a hydraulic head any day.
Take a pinstripe Ambassador and cut out the circle with an exacto-knife. Then cut the rim off, just a quarter inch or so above the metal hoop. Then drop that puppy onto the new head and listen to it. Of course, you could pay umpteen bucks for a "dead-ringer" but this is way cheaper and sounds better. Not really for snare unless you want that Phil Colons gated-snare thump thing.
It really kills the "pingy" upper harmonics without affecting the basic "thwap." (So glad we speak drum.)
Plus, if you leave a bit of the curvy part all around the edge, you don't have to duck tape it or anything, it just stays right there. This hot tip brought to you by Garibaldi, drummer for Tower of Power. Nuff sed.
