Mrs. Kim Lafarge of Dayton, Ohio checked her dog Spike, a Boston Terrier, onto American Airlines flight 831 to Gainesville, Florida at 10:38 A.M. on June 2, 2001. Due to a transfer flight for Mrs. Lafarge in Atlanta, Spike arrived in Gainesville a few hours ahead of her. Airport security officers Nancy Holcomb and John Jeree noticed that Spike didn't appear to be breathing and upon closer inspection, realized that he was dead. Ms. Holcomb then contacted her brother, Earl, an animal control officer for the Gainesville Police Department, in hopes of finding a dog who resembled Spike. As luck would have it, a dog was found that resembled Spike to a remarkable degree. Earl promptly delivered the animal to Ms. Holcomb, who put it in Spike's kennel and gave Spike to Earl Holcomb to be taken back to the animal shelter for immediate cremation.
Upon arrival in Gainesville, Mrs. Lafarge immediately hurried to Spike's kennel, but as soon as she saw him she began screaming and then fainted. When revived, she shouted "That's not Spike!" Ms. Holcomb asked her why she thought that. "Because," Mrs. Lafarge replied, "Spike's dead. I was bringing him home for burial!"
okay, I made that up, but it's a lot better than the crap on the news tonight. ("Things roll downhill! Find out why at 11!")
