Weird you should mention this. I've always wondered why people hated Jews. I was just reading an enormously entertaining book; "An Underground Education." It's got lots of stuff about sex, farts, torture, American history, assholes, dildos, fuckheads, riffraff and general buggery. I got it for $1.95 from QPB and it is without a doubt one of the most entertaining and scholarly tomes about outrageous subjects I've ever seen. Plus the guy has a great sense of humor.
He explains that when the Roman Catholic Church was so powerful, for nearly 1700 years, usury - loaning money for interest - was an excommunicatable sin. There was a general agreement that only Jews would be allowed to engage in this line of business, and in return they wouldn't be able to have any of the rights of a normal citizen; voting, owning property etc.
Periodically they would be rounded up and ran off or killed, chiefly in times when things got tough and scapegoats were needed. Oddly enough the best times for Jews were for about 500 years or so in Spain, up until good old Ferdinand and Isabella took the throne, when all the Jews were given two days notice to leave the country with just the clothes on their backs. Lots of them got sick and died from swallowing gold and jewels, and their bodies were hacked up by the locals to get the booty. Tough times, indeed.
Until I read that, I never knew why people hated Jews. My old man was a preacher and we were raised completely unaware of prejudice or general hatred. I think a lot of people who were raised to hate Jews didn't even know why.
I worked for a Jewish guy who loved this joke; Two old Jews were walking along and saw a beautiful girl. One says to the other "Oy! I'd love to fuck HER!" The other says; "Really? Out of WHAT?"
