That picture makes me hungry. We got a Mezkin food place within 100 yards of my house, the beachside type of "restaurant" that serves the food in those goddamn styrofoam containers. It's fun to watch the tourists use plastic forks or knives instead of their hands, because they poke a hole in the container and get those meskin food juices run down their leg and all over their Birkenstocks. (Some people think that's the highlight of the meal.) You want cooked gristle, this is your joint. I stopped ordering burritos there because they make them real strange; instead of layering the ingredients side-by-side on the tortilla before they roll them up, they somehow manage to get the ingredients uppy-downywise, so you wind up with solid beans/solid meat/solid rice/solid guacamole etc. Fucking un-nerving, if you axe me. (Billy Connolly says the weirdest thing about Mexican food is that no matter what you order the same thing arrives at your table, just folded differently.) Dumbfuck touristas love the joint, but I (who's Mother is from New Mexico) know better. Carne Asada does not contain globs of arthritic sheep intestines. (I think.) The trick is to come in on Thursday morning, when an old guy sets up a big trailer-mounted kettle and whomps up hundreds of fresh tamales right in the parking lot. They're just like Mom used to make, and are all gone by lunchtime. You see a steady stream of people stopping by to get them, sneering at the barbwire-scarred backs of the kitchen workers and sauntering off with the true bounty. If we want REAL Meskin, we gotta drive all the way over the mountain to a restaurant that has real Meskin food and tile-inlaid tables and fresh carrot juice. Even the fucking illegals here can't cook, they just come here to work at the beach so they can watch the Anglo chicas in thongs pretend nobody is staring at their cameltoes.
