I'm no Math whiz, but I'd guess Dub-ya was about 4 when that happened, maybe younger or not even born yet. I think that was under Truman's watch. For that matter, I believe it was the Army high command that made those decisions. I would wager that the President himself wasn't even aware of the various tests that the Army did at that time. I also doubt that the President would have been too terribly alarmed by it anyway; so little was known about atomic power at that time that it was like sci-fi to those folks. It should be noted, however, that the people we were fighting (the ones whose commander several years later banged his shoe on the lecturn at the UN and shouted "We will bury you!") were even more ruthless and barbaric and intent upon removing us from the face of the earth, at least officially. We've always done stuff that is rather shameful. Perhaps we should just give up and collapse on our own accord. Or maybe we could just be nicer. Let's email all of the people in the world who hate us (I'll cc: you in on that mailer) and tell em we're going to be nicer from here on out. That ought to settle em down. After all, the only reason that there's any trouble in the world at this point anyway is because of our exploitive business practices and corporate tyranny of all those innocent, peace-loving third-world peasants without whom this world would surely be a dreary place to live.
