Hell, maybe they were hired. Who the fuck knows. Did all the people of Germany know about Dachau and Auschwitz in 1938 or so? The depth of atrocity is never realized until after the fact; it is seldom speculated upon or believed beforehand that one's country will be the site of such horrors.
