Unusual Music Reviews: #1 Bob Seger ::: I hopped in Chuck and Veronica Fansler's T-Bird, the FM radio was playing the local classic rock station. The frequency response of their standard issue car radio was incredible. I spend my life in front of studio monitors, so I know evenly distributed frequency content when I hear it. I heard about 10 songs by various famous so-called singers. I won't name any names except the absolute best of that particular bunch... Bob Seger. He sang "Love To Watch Her Her Strut" or something like that. His voice was amazing. It reminded me very much of an old time rock'n'roll sax, the way it growled and pushed notes up the scale. The grain in his voice was beautiful, kind of a weathered wood swirl, wrapped in endless patterns of microscopic diamond crust, enveloping a warm melodic tone that always held a relationship to the chords as they passed underneath. The way he would gauge the stress and strain in his notes was dynamically related to the lyrics, like a poet! I know that sounds stupid, "of course its like a poet, its LYRICS", but the other singers on the radio that day just couldn't come close to the power of Seger's voice. I'm not a Seger fan, so I am only mildly familiar with his work, I've always liked him, and I've always thought he was good, but I'm too busy into other stuff. I've liked him since "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man", or what ever its called, but I must admit, I never heard him under conditions where I could really zone in on his voice. The motherfucker really can sing. He's OUTSTANDING in the context of a whole slew of famous singers, they don't have anywhere near the tone, the soul, or the God given ability to make a simple lyric come alive. The material he's working with is very standard, if someone else did the same lyric and music, it would be mediocre. Its not like Dylan, where the lyric knocks you on your ass, its bare bones rock, but the way he sings it elevates it to a higher level. I am definitely going to hone in on this man in the future, I want to study his voice in great detail, there's a lot of detail there to study. My message to Bob Seger: "You're a fucking KICK-ASS singer, man!"
