Vanity Sizing Today in the Fort Worth Star Telegram I learned that if you own a clothing store and order 100 of a certain style of dress in size 6 you are not going to get 100 size 6 dresses. The ladies fashion industry has decided that it should not deprive America’s chubby ladies fashionable sizes so when you get your 100 dresses marked size 6 a certain number of them (up to 30%) will be size 8 even though they are marked size 6. This practice is called “vanity sizing” and is expected to boost sales of ladies clothing appreciably. There will be nothing to tell the size eight woman that the dress she just bought that fit so perfectly and was marked size 6 was really a size 8. And she can tell her friends that she found a size 6 to fit perfectly---and she won’t be lying. She can show them the label. She is not lying. The clothing manufacturer is lying and what is that to her. Now there is another little twist. The crotch seam dimension for size 4 jeans has always been 21 to 34 inches depending upon style while this same seam in size 6 was considerably longer. Research teams from North Texas University recently measured a vast number of size 6 jeans and found them to have a crotch seam of 21 to 35 inches---just like the size 4 jeans. One of the researchers, Megan Wright of Fort Worth last week said, “Right now I just walked out with a large size 4. If you can make a size 6 woman into a size 2 it is going to boost her self esteem. She is going to come back to your store because she can wear your size 2 jeans” The size number just doesn’t mean much any more. It is just an arbitrary number. It is not you, it is them, and that is comforting. The research team also found that women will pay substantially more for a pair of size 6 jeans marked size 4 than they would have paid for the same pair of jeans marked size 6. It is a funny world.
