The guys in Neurosis have done some really interesting experimental stuff. Their Tribes of Neurot releases and some special things they've done (a seasonal deal where they allowed some tape to deteriorate and reproduced that somehow at points in that process - I know I made that muddy) have been uniquely creative with surprising results. Lately I've been listenin to a lot of "drug music" like BrianJonestownMassacre and Spiritualized and Spacemen3. There is a lot that is derivative about these bands, but it feels fresh to me the way it is inflected. There is a lot of VU drumbeats, sitars, background droning effects of one sort or another and the result is very hypnotic at times. At other moments it's like the Stooges or the Stones with a driving, raunchy feel to it. Anyway, it's a nice musical sound to kick around in for a while as a listener. I'm going to see Spiritualized tomorrow night and BJM next month up here.
