Legendary stage and screen actor Marlon Brando, whose performances in "A Streetcar Named Desire," "On the Water- front" and "The Godfather" earned him the recognition as one of the greatest actors of all time, has died in Los Angeles of unknown causes. He was 80. Brando's ground- breaking performance in Tennessee Williams' play "A Street- car Named Desire" shot him into movie stardom. He won his first Oscar three years later for his performance as ex- boxer Terry Malloy in "On the Waterfront." His most famous role was that of Don Corleone in "The Godfather." Director Francis Ford Coppola had only Brando in mind for the role and was rewarded when the film became a huge hit. The actor followed up "The Godfather" with a role in a different kind of film, Bernardo Bertolucci's "Last Tango in Paris," in which he has a fatal fling with a young Frenchwoman. Brando said he made many of his later films for the money -- he reportedly made $3.7 million for 12 days of work on "Superman." Sadly, Brando spent the last decade of his life morbidly obese and depressed over the deaths of family and friends. His survivors include a son from his first marriage, Christian Devi Brando; two children from his second marriage, Miko and Rebecca; and a son from the third marriage, Teihotu.
