BILLY DAVIS, SONGWRITER, DEAD AT 76 Songwriter Billy Davis, who wrote a number of hit songs but had his greatest success with the jingle-writing team that wrote "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke," died Sept. 2. He was 76. The jingle debuted in a television commercial in 1971, but quickly became a pop hit and was among the signa- ture songs for the decade. Although the song was a huge hit for Davis, he had already earned a place in pop music history for his R&B songwriting, most notably his co-writer credit on "Lonely Teardrops," a defining hit for R&B great Jackie Wilson, as well as "Reet Petite," Wilson's first charting hit in 1956. Davis later got together a group of singers, called the Hillside Singers, to produce a single with the same melody and harmonies, but with the new title "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony).
