DONALD GARDNER, SONGWRITER, DEAD AT 91 Songwriter Donald Yetter Gardner, best known for writing "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth," died in a Brockton, Mass., hospital at age 91. Gardner died Sept. 15 of complications from surgery after falling in his home in Needham, Mass., the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. In 1944, Gardner, a music teacher, and his wife helped 22 second- graders compose a song for Christmas and he asked them to finish the sentence, "All I want for Christmas is ..." He said he heard 16 of the children lisping answers without one or two front teeth. Later that evening, Gardner wrote the song that brought him royalties for the rest of his life. The song was sung by the students each Christmas, but after Gardner sang the song at a teacher's conference, a woman introduced him to the Witmark music company, which published the song in 1948. It reached the top of the charts in 1949. Gardner later become a music consultant and editor for Ginn & Co. music publishers, where he wrote songs for music text- books, composed church music and directed choirs. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris, along with three sons, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
