JOHN PEEL DEAD AT 65 Legendary British radio host John Peel, famous in the rock world for giving exposure to non-mainstream bands, died from an apparent heart attack. He was 65. Peel died unexpectedly Monday night in Cuzco, Peru, where he was vacationing with his wife, Sheila, the BBC reported Tuesday. "John's influ- ence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades and his contribution to modern music and music culture is immeasurable," said Andy Parfitt, Radio 1 controller. Peel, BBC Radio 1's longest-serving deejay and host of Radio 4's "Home Truths," was one of the first broad- casters to play punk, reggae and hip-hop on his show -- before they became mainstream. "He always had his finger on the pulse of the music industry and the fact that Radio 1 played the Undertones, the White Stripes and the Strokes today showed just how relevant he remained throughout his career," said Undertones' bassist Michael Bradley, adding their band benefited from Peel's support. Peel's show also hosted the famous "Peel Sessions," where acts, including Jimi Hendrix, The Smiths and The Cure, recorded tracks specifi- cally for the radio veteran's show. He is survived by his wife and four children.
