Old Men Declare War Young Men Fight Them A Letter to the President By Sarah Neely Dear President Bush, I was appalled today when I heard you and Donald Rumsfeld saying you would declare war on Saddam Hussein whether you had UN support or not, or the rest of the world or not. I think this is horribly irresponsible. Unfortunately I feel that you and your advisors are determined to have a war with Iraq no matter what. Where is the real proof? With all the advanced technology we have - being able to see everything about what we are bombing--how come we are not using that technology to find the proof of what is hidden and be done with it??? What is wrong with waiting for the UN inspectors to do their job-whether it takes a month or a year--Isn't peace worth that?? Unless real proof is shown - why are we going to fight a war that will be more terrible than any other to get revenge for not killing Saddam Hussein the first time. Our homeland is not ready for the new kind of war----we have no plan yet. Are you going to declare war with out preparing your own citizens for what they might face???? Are we going to be embroiled in a war that will bring terror everyday to our own country, that will cost billions, when our country needs billions to repair what is broken - the economy, our health system, our educations system- just to name a few. Do you think war will erase the knowledge of problems that plague our country from our minds??? Do you think war will improve our country???? The Vietnam War tarnished Presidents and changed a generation. Do we want that again? Old men declare war---young men fight them. How many members of Congress have sons of fighting age? Perhaps if those members had sons of fighting age they would be more careful about declaring wars that kill them. Perhaps only the members of Congress with sons of fighting age should vote to declare war. If that were the case--- perhaps those members and you would work harder for peace. Sincerely, Sarah Neely
