DARRELL "DIMEBAG" ABBOTT, GUITARIST, DEAD AT 38 Darrell Abbott, the guitarist known by his fans as "Dimebag," was fatally shot during a performance Wednesday at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. He was 38. His guitar riffs for Pantera and more recently Damageplan were a staple of heavy metal music. Abbott and his brother joined bassist Rex Rocker to form Pantera in 1983, and Abbott became known as "Diamond Darrell." He later used "Dimebag" and was often referred to as "Dime" by fans and friends. When the band signed with Atlantic Records in 1990, Abbott came into his own as a guitar player, and developed his signature frenetic sound. Abbott and his brother left Pantera in 2003 and formed Damageplan. His death shook the heavy metal music industry as colleagues continue to cope with the news and fans still flood Web sites to share their grief.
