TYRONE DAVIS, BLUES AND R&B SINGER, DEAD AT 66 Southern-born blues and R&B singer Tyrone Davis has died from complications of a stroke, the Chicago Tribune said Thursday. He was 66. Davis not only helped define the sound of Chicago soul in the 1960s and '70s in the wake of Curtis Mayfield, Jerry Butler and Gene Chandler, but continued to record and tour until he suffered a stroke last September. He was taken to Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and never regained consciousness before dying Wednesday, said his longtime manager and collaborator, Leo Graham. Davis' hits included "Turn Back the Hands of Time," "Can I Change My Mind" and "Turning Point." He was born in Greenville, Miss., but moved to Chicago at the age of 19. He worked in a factory by day to support his young family, but spent evenings at blues clubs and developed his own smooth style, the newspaper said. Davis is survived by his wife, Ann, and numerous children and grandchildren.
