MERLE KILGORE, SINGER-SONGWRITER, DEAD AT 70 Singer-songwriter Merle Kilgore has died of congestive heart failure, following complications related to cancer treatment. He was 70. Born Wyatt Merle Kilgore on Aug. 9, 1934, in Chickasha, Okla., Kilgore broke into the music business at 14. He later managed the career of Hank Williams Jr. Kilgore's compositions included "Ring of Fire," co-written with Johnny Cash, as well as the 10 million-selling Claude King hit, "Wolverton Mountain." He also wrote Webb Pierce's No. 1 country hit, "More and More." Kilgore served on the Country Music Association's Board Of Directors. He also served as vice president of CMA, and as president of both the Nashville Songwriter's Association International and the Nashville Songwriter's Foundation. He was named an honorary state senator in the State of Tennessee and was inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame. Kilgore is survived by his wife, Judy, sons, Steve and Duane Kilgore, daughters, Pam Compton, Kim Pomeroy, and Shane McBee, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
