JEF RASKIN, DESIGNER OF MACINTOSH COMPUTER, DEAD AT 61 Jef Raskin, the lead designer of the first Macintosh computer, has died at the age of 61. Raskin headed Apple Computer's Macintosh development team and named the project after his favorite type of apple. His work helped to advance the design of user interfaces, which were once mainly text-based and required users to memorize complex commands. Raskin left Apple in 1982, but continued to influence the design of computers through his writing, lectures, and consulting work. He later founded Information Appliance, where he designed the Canon Cat computer for Canon USA. In 2000 he published a book, "The Humane Interface," that is on the reading list at many universities. Raskin is survived by his wife, Linda Blum, and his children Aza, Aviva and Aenea.
