when I was 19, I was OBSESSED with odd time signatures, the duke will verify, I didn't write ANY song that wasn't weird as shit. this continued well into the 70's (ancient history is kinda funny) and I learned something: the GOOD odd timings are the ones you can't tell are weird. it becomes the obsession of the odd timing-ologist to find the ultimate odd timing that is indistinguishable from 4/4. THE UPSHOT: don't think about it too much, its all about feel. if it feels good, DO IT! if you find out later its only 4/4, hey, its cool. As you work with other musicians, they will tell you things about yourself you didn't realize, like "you always come in on the and of one" and ALL KINDS OF SHIT you're doing subconsciously only other people notice. It boils down to this: you are ALREADY weirder than you'll ever know! Flow with it. Accept yourself, or do like popeye-x, if you dare, LOVE YOURSELF UNABASHEDLY, and tell everyone else to go fuck themselves!
