A douche like Benny Hinn can only ask for money. A local minister can offer advice, if you're of the faith. (Before my sophomore year of high school, I gave up religion for the unholy trinity of sex, D&D, and rock and roll. Drugs didn't kick in until later.) A friend, a good motherfucker, someone Hunter Thompson would have referred to as a Johnson, is far more valuable. Here or there, we can't forget them. Fucking preachers. Not all of them, of course. But the dicks who ran that church camp when I was a kid... Here I was, fifteen years old, still heartbroken that a girl had left me for one of my friends. All of these crazy fuckers speaking in tongues all around me. Everyone's been lulled and pressured into feeling guilty, feeling like the worst sinners on Earth, when we're really just foolish adolescents. So I'm crying my eyes out over this girl... And THAT's when they swept in. And THAT's when I gave up on it. Every bit of it. I tried to believe, I tried to give it a chance even after I left. But I knew it was bullshit. I knew it was just some opportunist fuck's tax write-off. Just another tool to raise young Republicans. You know what really did it, though? (And I hope I'm not changing the subject here.) Music. They didn't want me to listen to music anymore. Not MY music, anyway. My favorite band at the time (still is, by the way...perhaps because of this experience...) was Anthrax. This was back in the early nineties, so Joey Belladonna was still the singer. Really dark shit like "Persistence of Time." Amazing thrash metal. Coming from a pretty dark fucking place at the time (abusive step-parent; nuff said), I looked to music, as many do, for an outlet. It was one of those things, like movies, comics, books, that kept me going. And these pieces of shit wanted me to give it up? For an invisible man who supposedly lives in the sky? Eat a testicle pie and wash it down with a chocolate shit shake, you know? I've made some really good friends because of music, movies, comics, etc. I never made one on account of religion.
