LOS ANGELES, Feb. 21 — The authorities said today that they planned to charge a 30-year-old father of six with using fumes from a charcoal grill to kill five of his children early Wednesday in an attempted murder-suicide. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies found the children, ages 2 to 10, in their beds. Three of the children died of asphyxiation at the scene, one was pronounced dead at a hospital and the fifth died today. The father, Adair Garcia, and a 9- year-old daughter remained hospitalized and were expected to recover. Deputy Rick Varela said Mr. Garcia would be arrested on murder charges once his condition improved. "They're ready as soon as he can be transferred," Deputy Varela said. Investigators said they initially believed that the grill might have been used to heat the house, but they later found that heaters in the home, which the authorities described as neatly kept, were working. The police were called to the house in Pico Rivera, about 10 miles southeast of Los Angeles, about 6:50 a.m. Wednesday by the children's grandmother, who had gone there to baby- sit. She smelled smoke and notified a neighbor, who called 911. Investigators said they believed the deaths were a result of carbon monoxide from the grill, which was smoking heavily. Fire officials said 25 parts per million of carbon monoxide in the air was considered unsafe. Levels in the house reached 214 parts per million, turning it into what fire officials called a gas chamber. Deputy Varela said the authorities did not know what had set off Mr. Garcia's actions. "The exact trigger we don't know," he said. "But we do know for about a week the mother had not been staying there." The children were identified as Brenda, 10; Jonathan, 6; Cecelia, 4; and Anthony, 2. The fifth child, a 6- year-old, was not identified. Co-workers of Mr. Garcia, a telephone company technician, said he and his wife, Adriana Ibeth Arreola, had worked together a few years ago and used to joke that they would have children until they filled up their Chevy Suburban.
