If you ain't got time for long reads, Ambrose Bierce wrote some cool shit about that same time. He was killed by Pancho Villa in 1914. He had a really dark sense of humor. He wrote "Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" that was the basis for the movie "Jacob's Ladder". He wrote quite a few Civil War short stories and also a "Devil's Dictionary" that is hilarious.
