Dear Congressman,

I was disturbed to read in The Washington Post online today that my federal government is once again about to reach its borrowing limit which is currently set at $6.4 trillion. Now the representatives of the American people want to raise the limit to $7.38 trillion.

This is frightening. This is especially frightening when I look at my paycheck and see that nearly 20% of my gross income goes toward federal taxes every two weeks.

I know it is the duty of every American to pay taxes, but when almost one fifth of the entire country's gross product falls short of covering our budget by nearly one trillion dollars I feel there is a problem.

I do not know whether cutting taxes will stimulate the economy into new growth and thereby create more tax revenue or if increasing taxes will offset the new budgetary increases, but I can do simple math. And it seems to me that in order to pay off a $7.38 trillion debt every one of America's 300 million men women and children would have to pay $24,600.

I don't have $24,600.

What I do have is a congress of elected representatives whose job it is to insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to myself and my posterity and do it within a budget.

Perhaps if you quit spending my money on frivolities at home, the arsenals of half the foreign countries around the world and a federal government that lumbers forward under its own weight like a juggernaut, we might be able to balance the budget.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Sincerely,
