JUNE CASH, WIFE OF JOHNNY, DEAD AT 73 June Carter Cash, a singer, songwriter, actress and the wife and collaborator of Johnny Cash, died yesterday in Nashville, after having been critically ill following surgery to replace a heart valve on May 7. She was 73.
Her best known accomplishment is probably the hit song "Ring of Fire," which is about falling in love with Johnny Cash, and which he performed. June wrote the song with Merle Kilgore in 1963, long before her marriage to Johnny in 1968 but after she had become close to him, working with him on cross-country tours. It is probably the most complicated popular love song in country music. Her list of accomplishments runs far and wide.
